My research journey started as a 4th year student at the then, University of Port Elizabeth, where I conducted a health education programme in the Walmer informal settlement and evaluated the effectiveness of the health education intervention.

I then left the University to pursue my internship and registration with the South African Pharmacy Council. By the end of my internship year, I knew I wanted to continue research, this time in the field of women's health. The project compared standard treatment guidelines from various countries for the management of hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women. In addition, I conducted structured telephonic interviews with women taking hormone replacement therapy and analysed their responses.

I left the academic environment and pursued a career in pharmacy practice working in the retail, primary health care, and wholesale sectors. During this time, I realised my passion was in teaching and returned to the University as clinical coordinator in 2008. In 2011, I was employed permanently by the University to manage the pharmacy support workforce programmes.

After an almost 20-year hiatus from research, I registered for my PhD and completed my study in 2021 entitled, Pharmacy Support Personnel Qualifications and Scope of Practice needs: the South African Experience. This was a mixed methods study and gave me further experience in both qualitative and quantitative research.
