Introduction
-
Close contact with Port Elizabeth's major hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, and community pharmacies means the University of Port Elizabeth's Pharmacy Department is well-positioned to educate and train students in the diverse aspects of pharmaceutical practice.
-
The degree extends over 4 years full-time study, whereafter students must complete a year of practical training (internship) and a further year of community service in order to be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council.
Practical Training Component
Students are required to complete an advanced level first-aid course and a family planning course before being awarded the degree. It is also required that students work a number of practical hours in a hospital or community pharmacy before completing the degree.
Internship
After obtaining the degree, candidates must undergo a one-year internship in which an evaluation must be successfully completed before they may register with the South African Pharmacy Council. This training may be done in hospitals, community pharmacies, the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry or in academia if they are continuing with postgraduate studies.
Community Service
Once students have completed their internship year and passed the competency exam, they are required to do a further year in community service before they will be registered with the South African Pharmacy Council. Candidates are required to apply for positions in state hospitals and clinics throughout the country and are remunerated as entry-level pharmacists. This year provides a unique learning experience for entry-level pharmacists as they gain important managerial, financial and interpersonal skills far beyond those of entry-level pharmacists of the past.
